Hidden gems

Somehow Matt – not unlike a truffle pig – always sniffs out the best food haunts. Here is his review of a Balinese seafood place we (sorry … HE) discovered.

Only a few streets into Sanur suburbia, serenity can be found in a seafood mixed rice plate locally known as Nasi Campur. Served in a pleasant back yard garden restaurant, the quiet ambience and sublime flavours are worth the 5 minute trip across the highway away from the beach and main tourist area.

Tranquility found just two turns from the main drag.

Octopus two ways, inked and char-grilled, whole fried trevally, crispy fish skin and other assorted goodies, spicy, salty, delicious. A fish soup also containing a whole poached trevally the perfect accompaniment.

A breathtaking display – like a painting.

To our delighted surprise the ice tea ordered was combined with a coconut syrup and somehow they had become good friends.

A fruit salad topped with orange and lime was the perfect post meal palate cleanser.

Had to explain Matt how to take a selfie …

This brief respite from the cavitating cacophony of Sanur’s main drag, it’s pulsating push and pull was very welcome. Pulsating street life is magnetic, but a brief escape to some silence, a cool breeze and a Seafood Nasi Campur Special is revitalising as well as audibly mmmm delicious.
